AH/LEE/SEE/UH : form

Alicia Marulanda is a 23 year old artist and designer from Montreal, Quebec. She graduated in 2012 in Illustration and Design from Dawson College. ALICIA SPEAKS: “While more recently I’ve found my niche doing mostly graphic and apparel design, I’ve been an artist my whole life and the process of creating comes very naturally to me. Drawing is something that I’ve always found so much joy in, especially when I was younger and much more shy. It was difficult for me to make friends, express myself, and share what I was feeling, so as I grew up art and design became a way for me to communicate. My characters are liberated and unapologetically themselves. They allow me to personify my emotions and create artwork that people have come to empathize with. I’ve also stripped down my style of art quite a bit over the years and try to say as much as possible with the most simple and sensual lines. I am always trying to find a way back to the ‘bare bones’ of what makes a …

pangs, bits, and pieces: Nathaniel Stephens

BEGINNING On weekends and/or breaks and vacations from school, I would walk the streets of Glendale, Downtown L.A., Chinatown and Highland Park. I would take shots of people, friends, or an empty corner in a friend’s house. I saw bits and pieces of me in these photographs, pieces of me I never knew existed within myself, which made me go out and shoot more the next day. About Nathaniel Stephens: “I am going to start my senior year at Daily High school in Glendale, California in the beginning of August 2015. I have become enthralled with photography as of recently (September of this year will be my one year anniversary as …

“Mangos” by Benny Feldmann

Flash fiction and artwork by Benny Feldmann. Click on pictures to enlarge. Mangos Deep within Jack’s stomach, a mass of seven partway digested mangos clumped together to form a large obstruction which plugged entry into his small intestine. His stomach protested in a deep, bellowing roar, sending pain thrashing through his belly. Jack was overcome by an urge to throw up, right then and there, fifty feet from the Intelligentsia Cafe, five minutes before his 3 o’clock interview, surrounded by the slow, thick afternoon crowd of downtown shoppers. It was as if a rubber hammer was swung upwards into his abdomen. He groaned, grabbing his button-up shirt and twisting. His tie hit his face when he bent down, and as he pulled it away he had no choice but look directly at his black slacks and glossy new shoes. The interview. He forced himself to a standing position, ploughing forward and swallowing the urge to puke. Normally at this time of the day, Jack could be found on the corner of Union and Raymond, standing …
